INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE SYMPOSIUM 09 - 11.03.2007 LUXEMBOURG
Colophon 2007 - NEWS 08.02.2007
Countdown to Colophon. Only 1 month to go before the 1st International Magazine Symposium COLOPHON 2007. Don’t miss out. Get your FLASH PASS here
What started as a vague question – “should there be a catalogue of some kind to accompany the Colophon2007 symposium?” – morphed and grew into the layout sheets I see before me: a stand-alone, 400+ page book about the joy and magic of magazines.
Our team was based in Luxembourg (Mike, the Publisher), London (Jeremy, the art director) and Madrid (myself), with the whole thing being produced and supported by the UK publisher John Brown.
In creating WE LOVE MAGAZINES, we've tracked down copies of Polish women's magazines from the 1960s, German satirical magazines threatened by the Kaiser, punk fanzines, classic Esquires and Cosmos, and much more to help us both reflect on the past and look to the future of the industry. MAGAZINE PLAYLISTS: 30 HOURS OF CHILLED OUT SOUNDS
The ROOM WITH A VIEW, temporary magazine store and relaxation area, will play 30 hours of “MAGAZINE PLAYLISTS” - each invited magazine is requested to programme 1 hour of music: be a part of it!
What do you need to do?
We will create a 30-hour programme of music, and announce the creator for each one hour session “ XX magazine presents”.
Create a soundtrack to fit the environment! The area where the music will be played is full of light. People will want to read, drink, mingle and relax – so the music should be mellow and chilled out to set the tone. What would also be nice would be to include some tracks from local bands so the final result is a smorgasbord of international music (foreign delights for the ears)
As music is part of the creative process of many magazine publishers, we thought it would be nice to share some aural delights (to go with the visual) with the symposium visitors.

We've spoken to people from all over the world, researched the history of what today we take for granted, commissioned new work and invited the ten chosen magazines from Colophon2007 to represent their publications in their own personal style. We've also learnt amazing things in the process, such as the true birth of photojournalism, and how to sell ads the Vice magazine way.
With specially commissioned chapters from publishing experts, lots and lots of magazine spreads, the Colophon2007 directory of pop culture magazines (filled with the contacts everyone needs) and exclusive behind-the-scenes stories, we hope this book will be inspiring and useful for editors, designers, publishers, distributors, printers, advertisers, writers, photographers, illustrators, readers... in fact, everyone who loves magazines.
So when it came to thinking up a slogan for the book, that part didn't take any time at all.
"We Love Magazines. The essential read for anyone with a passion for print."
There. Now all we have to do is print it, and get it out there via Die Gestalten's worldwide distribution network. And then get to work on the next edition. I, for one, can't wait.

“Twenty five years ago I was told by one of my professors ‘Print is Dead’. Twenty-five years later I continue to enjoy my hobby, education, and profession in this dead industry. Colophon 2007 is to me more than "We Love Magazines," it is a celebration that print magazines are alive and kicking...and that Today is the real golden age of magazines...because print is not the limit...just the beginning...the future is now... Come share the love." |
“Email and the internet are great ways to exchange knowledge and experience, but nothing beats meeting people face to face. Colophon2007 is the chance to do just that. It’s a unique opportunity to spend a weekend in the company of people that share your passion for magazines.” Jeremy Leslie (London / UK) |
“Magazine making made me a freak among my friends and neighbours. Fortunately, now there's Colophon 2007 so that for 3 complete days I won't feel alone in the world. Thanks so much.” Luis Mendo (Amsterdam / Netherlands) |
“CMYK in Barcelona (2005) was a great experience and opportunity to meet editors, designers and people interested in magazine culture. I have the impression that Colophon will be even bigger than CMYK and full of new impulses and ideas. We will come along with a bunch of interesting publications such as the bastard-project and the slanted magazine. I expect to talk to publishers for cooperation projects, see designers and typography nerds. And I hope that a bunch of people will make it on late Sunday at 6:00 pm to our speech "Killing White Space: about paper murderers and print-junkies". See you! Lars Harmsen (Karlsruhe / Germany) |
“Finally through Colophon2007, the stylepress can begin to work together and show the traditional magazine industry that they are a force to contend with." David Renard (New York / USA) |
“Colophon2007 to me means new inspirations, useful connections and constructive debate. And more incredible, creative, exciting, adventurous magazines than I can possibly get my head around. I can't wait!” Andrew Losowsky (Madrid / Spain) |
“Colophon 2007 is the best way to develop a worldwide YUMMY invasion. Our team think that the time has come to transform our passion into a business” Pascal Monfort (Paris / France) |
“publishing, the act of 'making something public' is such a strong (and exciting) gesture – what remains is the question as to what it really is that we want to ‘make public'...” Anja Lutz (Berlin / Germany) |
