Founded in 2006
The magazine will focus on fashion in a more unconventional way, with contributions by some of the most prominent photographers in Spain including Nico, Daniel Riera, Bela Adler
& Salvador Fresneda and Paco & Manolo, in addition to international names. However, Metal is a magazine that will also include music, literature and the arts and a myriad of topics reflecting Zeitgeist. It is a magazine conceptualized by young people and directed to a young audience (between the ages of 18 and 40). Metal was born out of the desire to provide something new to the Spanish editorial market which is currently at a standstill. Metal invests in the rebirth of real concepts and contents and argues that a different magazine format is not only feasible
but also utterly necessary. It is a magazine designed by one of the country’s most celebrated professionals, Albert Folch, who is responsible for the art direction and the graphic design of the studio by his own name. (www.albertfolch.com) Initially, we envision Metal to be a magazine with free distribution, not ruling out the possibility of paid-for distribution in
newsstands and bookshops by 2007. Metal is based in Barcelona, born with a truly
international scope. This is why Metal will also be distributed in selected locations in London, Berlin, Paris and New York.

Metal
What is your magazine about?
METAL is an artistic and creative magazine that speaks about pretty things. We love fashion, art and photography and we try to disturb to the people with our pictures and stories.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Behind the project there is a little team and the hard work of a lot of collaborators around the world. Ángela Esteban, Romina Herrera and Alejandro Nieto from NY, Julian Monge from Paris, Raquel García from London and Poncho Paradela, Alberto Murtra, Victoria Gómez and myself, Yolanda Muelas, from Barcelona. We work with a really some fabulous designers, Omar and Albert from Albert Folch Studios, and we are very happy of working with photographers with a big talent such as Miguel Villalobos, Christophe Kutner, Daniel Sannwald, Paco y Manolo, Nico, Txema Yeste, Virgili Jubero, Driu & Tiago, Chris Vidal and a long list impossible to name them all here. Also METAL would be impossible without the words of contributors like Carol Marín, Philippe Pourhashemi, Álex Brahim, Paula Yacomuzzi, Álex Ceball and many others. Thanks to them METAL is a little miracle that comes out five times per year.
I started METAL 2 years and half ago. Before that I did other magazine for around 12 years. The motivations? Try to do something different and new.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We produce one issue with a lot of dedication. I spend all my time here working in a full time and more.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
To be born, of course, grew up so quick for the little time old it is, use Spanish and English text indifferently, having distribution around Europe and USA, got at last a good commercial for the advertisement and now I getting fat with time (I hope).
Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Good taste, a lot of freedom given to the photographers in the fashion stories, try to be non conventional, interesting contents and nice covers.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
The difficulties always the same: the little budget. The think to help: getting more budget, we don’t need more.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
At the top.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
People who knows to value the beautiful things and who contemplate the magazines non only by its content but as an object in itself.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, is very important. Definitively yes.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Our relationship whit the advertisement could be better but I hope improve it this year. We try to keep the necessary balance with the advertisers in our contents, but I have to say it doesn’t influence so much. Anyway it doesn’t matter so much when you works with the people you want and you like.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Just a miracle! I see it and I like and I think how we get arriving till here?
Magazine favourite(s) that inspired you in your career.
I-D, The Face, Dutch, Purple, Self Service, Fantastic Man, Encens. (And others like Rolling Stone –in its beginnings–, Vanity Fair and Interview).
Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favourite in your collection?
I love my collection of I-D.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I don’t think I’m a maniac. I don’t buy so many magazines, some months I don’t buy any, others I buy 5 or 6. Sometimes more. Depend on… Always I try to see all I can. Problem in Barcelona is many titles don’t arrive, but there is a really good store, Freetime, there you have a good selection. I use to pass hours.
We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
I know I go late but if you don’t talk with them you should talk with people of apartamento, a new magazine about interiors & people really really nice. You can see it here: http://www.apartamentomagazine.com/.
